T-Rex Cafe

T-Rex Cafe

We went to the T-Rex Cafe on my son’s birthday when we were at Disneyworld. Note to those trying to get Reservations: Call the Restaurant ((407) 828-8739). I tried to make reservations at Disneyworld.com at 180 days in advance, it is showed NO availability. What?!?! I didn’t think the restaurant was that popular! I then called the restaurant and their schedule was WIDE open. I could book anytime I wanted for that day (even with a party of 7). Not sure why this is the case, because you can book Rainforest Cafe online and they are owned by the same company….

My favorite way to Save at both T-Rex cafe and Rainforest Cafe is by earning FREE gift cards through MyPoints! Both my Husband and I have accounts. We had enough gift cards saved up on our last trip to eat at Rainforest Cafe 3 times and T-rex once – all for FREE! Plus we have the Landry’s Select Club (I got it on sale years ago… but the welcome gift covers the cost of the club membership), and my husband and sons’s birthdays are close together, so we were able to use my Husband’s Birthday Reward while we were there too! (My husband and I both have our own cards). Join MyPoints and start earning your own free gift cards! (FYI – it is good to sign up with a junk email account)

You are greeted by a big T-rex, that moves its head, when you enter the restaurant. There is a big gift shop as well.

We sat near the bar, under the giant Octopus.

T-Rex Cafe

When we go again, I’ll probably ask to sit in the ice room!

Just like the Rain/Thunder storms at Rainforest Cafe, T-Rex has Meteor Showers. Kids always like that!

The food was good. Nothing to write home about, but it was good – very similar to Rainforest Cafe. You eat here for the fun at atmosphere – not for the world-class cuisine.

Speaking of Atmosphere, this restaurant is so loud, it is hard to hear those you are eating with, much less the waiter. Maybe it was just because of where we were sitting? We had the HARDEST time hearing our waiter! However, it is not nearly as loud as Hard Rock Cafe in Downtown Disney. We’ll never eat there again for that reason alone – I couldn’t even hear my husband sitting next to me!

To finish up our meal, since it was our son’s birthday, we ordered the Chocolate Extinction. It says it feeds 4, but there were 7 of us and could barely finish. It is similar to the Vollllccccaaannnoooo at Rainforest Cafe.

I was surprised that it was actually pretty good! Plus it was really fun for our kids 🙂

While it is not my favorite restaurant, as long as we have kids, I am certain we’ll be back, especially when I can eat for FREE 🙂 Kids loved it and the food was good, so I call it a successful Birthday dinner!

Disneyland Season of Force and Long Closures

I meant to post this yesterday when the news broke. The Disney Parks blog announced some big changes to Disneyland, coming up very soon.

Here is what they said:

At Disney Parks, we’re preparing to celebrate the excitement around all things Star Wars with brand-new themed experiences. Guests in Tomorrowland at Disneyland park in Southern California will soon be able to experience their favorite Star Wars stories when Season of the Force begins November 16. We’ll have opening dates to share for these new Star Wars experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida soon.

Season of the Force at Disneyland park will take guests to a galaxy far, far away with these special experiences:

Star Wars Launch Bay

This new area will offer opportunities to visit with favorite Star Wars characters, special exhibits, peeks at the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens and much more. Here’s a look inside!

  • Choose Your Destiny with Special Character Experiences
    • Dark Side – Encounter one of the most iconic villains from Star Wars, Darth Vader.
    • Light Side – Fly casual at this makeshift Rebel base, and meet the most famous co-pilot in the galaxy, Chewbacca.
  • Explore the Dark and the Light in Themed Galleries
    • Dark Side Gallery – Get a look at authentic pieces of stormtrooper armor as well as famous Sith lightsabers once wielded by masters of the dark side.
    • Light Side Gallery – Explore a gallery filled with Rebel flight helmets and lightsabers once wielded by Jedi Knights.
    • Preview Gallery – See props from the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
    • Starship Gallery – Discover models of famous starships and their pilots from throughout the Star Warssaga.
  • Join the Battle in the Star Wars Game Center – Play the latest games from the Star Wars galaxy, includingDisney Infinity 3.0 – featuring park-exclusive Toy Box levels.

Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple

Coming in December, experience a twist on the Jedi Training experience when you will encounter new characters and a new villain from the popular Disney XD series, Star Wars Rebels.

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

This popular attraction will feature a new scene inspired by the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Limited-Time Experiences

  • Hyperspace Mountain – Climb aboard a reimagined Space Mountain attraction, in which guests will join an X-wing starfighter battle.
  • Revisit favorite scenes from classic Star Wars films at Tomorrowland Theater.
  • Try new themed food.

Choose your side during Season of the Force, beginning November 16 at Disneyland park in California.

Now Here is what I find most interesting: They announced they are closing several attractions to start construction on Star Wars Land. This is VERY exciting news for our family! We are very much looking forward to both Star Wars Lands being built. The closures give us a better idea where Star Wars Land is being built and what we can expect when it opens!

Disney Parks is also preparing to take guests to a galaxy far, far away with new Star Wars-themed lands. With groundbreaking scheduled to take place in 2016 for our largest single-land expansions ever, building the new 14-acre lands will be major projects at both Disneyland park in Southern California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

Work to make room for this new land at Disneyland park in California will require the Rivers of America and the Disneyland Railroad to close temporarily. The following will suspend operations at the end of the operating day on January 10:

  • The Disneyland Railroad, including all stations
  • Attractions along the Rivers of America, including:
    • “Fantasmic!”
    • Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia
    • Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
    • Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes

We look forward to all of these attractions reopening in the future.

Elsewhere in Frontierland, Big Thunder Ranch – including Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue, Big Thunder Ranch Petting Farm and Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree – will close permanently at the end of the operating day on January 10.

Thoughts on the closures? I am a bit sad we won’t be able to ride the Railroad on our next trip. After our many, many, many trips to Disneyland, we never visited the Big Thunder Ranch, or ridden the Canoes (they are usually closed when we go). Pirate’s Lair and The Riverboat/Sailing ship – we have done both of those several times, but are not a “must-do” for our trips, in fact, we skip them on many trips….. Fantasmic is a FANTASTIC show, but I prefer to watch it at Disneyworld, because they have an entire stadium to watch it in, instead of having to find a spot, or wait very eary in a spot (not my idea of fun). So I am not too bummed about any of the closures on our upcoming trip. We are very excited about the new Star Wars experiences available though!

Top 5 Snacks at the Magic Kingdom

Top 5 Snacks at the Magic Kingdom

Snacking is one of my favorite things to do at Disneyworld. One of the things that Disneyworld has over Disneyland (I LOVE both places!) is food. The food at Disneyworld is WAY better than Disneyland. I did my top 5 favorite snacks at Epcot (that was HARD to narrow down!) and now, here are my Top 5 must have snacks at the Magic Kingdom! What are your favorites? Did I miss any?

1. Dole Whips – This just had to be number one. This is my favorite at both Disneyland, Disneyworld, and Aulani. I love me a Dole Whip! My kids actually aren’t huge fans (what is wrong with them?!?! I don’t think they are mine 😉 ), but that just leaves more for me. I’ve had the Dole Whip Floats, and while they are delicious as well, I always go back to the classic Dole Whip. This is the one treat that is an ABSOLUTE must for any trip to Disney.

2. Cinnamon Rolls – I am still a little bitter about Starbucks taking over the Main Street Bakery. The cinnamon rolls there were HUGE and delicious! We always had to split them because they were so large. With the Bakery no longer in the Magic Kingdom, Gaston’s now saves the day when it comes to my Cinnamon Roll fix. Now they are not quite the same as the ones they used to make at the Bakery, but they are HUGE and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised and happy to have another place to pick up my beloved Cinnamon Rolls. These are definitely worth stopping for! YUM (dang it! I need a cinnamon roll now… I guess I should go make some… or fly to Orlando and pick one up – same thing right?)

IMG_7697

3. Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich – this is available at a few different places in the Magic Kingdom, including Sleepy Hollow Refreshments and the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. These sandwiches are GIGANTIC! I could never eat one myself. We buy them and split them between 2 (or 3) of us! We always pick up a few and eat them while we watch the fireworks at night! You can pick the type of ice cream and cookies you want – They are a great snack on a warm day!

4. Mickey Kitchen Sink Sundae – My kids absolutely LOVE their Mickey Kitchen Sink. It was a great souviener to bring home – big thanks to their Aunt for buying it for them while we were there 🙂 The sundae that you get in the sink is very large as well. It is enough for the entire family to share, and then you get to take the sink home! How awesome is that? Souvenier and a delicious Ice Cream treat all in one! IMG_2351 IMG_7632

5. Big Top Treats – this is a bit of a cop-out, but if you are wanting a treat, or many treats, head over to Big Top Treats. There is something there to please every member of the family! Caramel Apples, Fudge, Cupcakes, House-made Caramel Popcorn (my FAVORITE – I LOVE fresh caramel popcorn!). You can even watch snacks being freshly made in front of your eyes (reminds me of the Candy Kitchen at Disneyland!)

What are you favorite snacks at the Magic Kingdom?

Disneyland 60th Anniversary End Date

60

I am excited to hear the end date of the Disneyland 60th Anniversary because it means we will make it there JUST before the celebration ends!

The Disneyland 60th Anniversary is scheduled to end on September 5th (Labor Day) of next year! That means our next vacation will be during the last week of the celebration! YAY! Then I will have gone to the 50th and 60th Anniversaries since being and adult/parent (and I plan to keep this tradition up!).

So you have almost an entire year to get to Disneyland and experience the 60th Anniversary for yourself. Make your plans now. We plan to try out the new Marriott Courtyard across the street from the Disneyland entrance for at least one night of our trip – the waterpark there looks amazing and the rooms are big enough for our family of 6!

Are you planning on attending the 60th Anniversary Celebration? If I were to wager a guess – after the Celebration ends, I am thinking Disneyland will be starting construction of Star Wars land 🙂 (YAY! My family is thrilled to try out the Star Wars Lands in both Disneyland and Disneyworld)

Disney Quest to close

Disney Quest

Kids at Disney Quest – August 2014

My kids were sad yesterday to hear that they are closing Disney Quest. We went there a few times on our last visit (my son went on his 9th birthday), and they really enjoyed it. 5 Floors of video games – what kid wouldn’t love it? I was not a huge fan of the place. Too noisy and easy to lose kids, but video games aren’t my thing, so I am not the best Judge. My husband and kids, on the other hand, loved the place (so I usually sent him with the older ones and I enjoyed the Savannah View Villa, while the younger ones napped). Although, when we went for my son’s 9th birthday a few months ago, I thoroughly enjoyed watching his face while he rode the Virtual Space Mountain. The person running the ride let us watch the monitor. The look of PURE JOY on his face will be etched in my mind forever.

Disney Quest’s demise is part of the continuing change from Downton Disney into Disney Springs. The whole area was a mess when we were there a few months ago. It will be nice to see what it all looks like when they are finished. There is so much that has closed since our trip a few months ago – glad we got to see/experience it all before they closed!

Disney Quest will be replaced by an NBA experience. The NBA Experience at Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney) will include high-tech experiences, a restaurant and a store.

Are you happy or sad to see Disney Quest go? I assume Disney was at the point they needed to Upgrade/improve the attraction or let it go. They decided to move on and let it go. Disney is all about change and new attractions, keeping things fresh – even if my family would prefer Disney Quest to the NBA experience.

Frozen Ride in Epcot Opening Date and Walkthrough

FEAR54714

Disney has given everyone a sneak peak at the new Frozen ride at Epcot and a possible opening date! This article in the WSJ gives us an idea of what the ride will be like. The rumored opening date is May 1st – Just in time for next summer.  My kids are excited for this ride. I am just glad we got to ride Maelstrom one last time just before they closed it last summer!

The ride will be named “Frozen Ever After.”  It is an adventure fit for the entire family that will take guests through the kingdom of Arendelle. Disney storytelling combined with new technology and favorite moments and music from the film will make guests feel like they stepped into the magical world of “Frozen.”

Guests will be transported to the Winter in a Summer Celebration where Queen Elsa embraces her magical powers and creates a winter-in-summer day for the entire kingdom. They will also visit Elsa’s Ice Palace and the ice-blue world of the North Mountain along with other locations before returning to the Bay of Arendelle. Of course, favorite “Frozen” characters, including the Snowgies from the animated short “Frozen Fever,” will be part of this new attraction, along with the spectacular sights inspired by the film.

While it doesn’t feature any new songs, there are several new lyrics to existing melodies written for “Frozen Ever After” by movie composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez. The logs and the path will remain the same as the original, Maelstrom ride, but everything else you see along the way is being replaced.

While waiting in line, visitors will walk by Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post. The trader with the thick accent will occasionally clear steam on the windows to utter a hearty “yoo-hoo!” to people walking by.

Once they board their logs, “Frozen Ever After” riders will first see goofy snowman Olaf and equally goofy reindeer Sven setting up the Winter Festival premise.

Next is a stop at Troll Valley, where Grandpappy Troll tells a gathering of children the story of how Anna and Kristof met, before the log goes up a ramp to find Olaf again, singing a song while ice skating, right next to Anna and Kristof, who are singing with their friend Sven.

Behind a set of doors is the moment any visitor is sure to be waiting for: Elsa, on a balcony, singing “Let It Go” in her ice castle. It’s the centerpiece of the ride, “the big, big scene,” Ms. Mangum said, and it features elaborate effects to create simulated snow crystals soaring around the room.

Visitors will next ride by Marshmallow, the giant, formerly evil snowman from “Frozen” and his miniature Snowgie pals. Marshmallow himself yells “Let It Go” in time with Elsa’s song before the log travels through a mist cloud and reaches the final scene, which includes fireworks and a wave from Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Sven and Kristof.

Polynesian Cultural Center, Swap Meet, and Valley of the Temples

While at Aulani, we did venture from the Resort a few times (although we could have been there the whole week without any problem!). Here are the places we visited.

We have friends that recently moved here from Oahu – they had many GREAT suggestions on places to visit. My husband’s cousin also lives on Oahu, so we had lots of information about the island before even going! One place everyone agreed that we MUST do is the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet to get our souvenirs. It was open for a couple hours after our flight landed, so that is the FIRST place we headed once we had our rental car! Traffic and construction were big issues, but we finally made it with a little over an hour until closing time. I am soooo glad we made it! This place is amazing and the prices were fantastic. Make sure you bring cash – we knew this fact beforehand and made sure we had plenty for our purchases. Your souvenirs will be 2/3 – 3/4 LESS here than anywhere else on the island, especially gift shops. For example, we purchased kukui nut leis for about $3-4 a piece. Everywhere else we saw them on the island, they were about $10-$15 a piece!  My kids got Coconut Monkey banks. We picked up t-shirts for about $2. My daughter and I got sarongs for like $5 and she got herself a coconut purse. My husband and boys got Hawaiian shirts and much more! We got TONS of souvenirs for a family of 6 at a fraction of the price. We even picked up a hand carved tiki statue – and the guy carved our name in it for us! By the time we were done, many vendors were starting to shut down, but I am so glad we made it in time! This is a MUST do for all your souvenirs! I am glad it was out first stop on Oahu!

We also went by Pearl Harbor… Remember the traffic and construction issues? Well, we didn’t get there until just before closing. So I don’t have many hints or suggestions for touring, because we just had enough time to look around, which worked well, since our kids were tired from the long plane trip. At least they got to see it.

We took a day from Aulani (in the middle of our week) to go see some other sites on the island. We were considering going to the Dole plantation, but our friends told us it probably wasn’t worth the trip/price (especially since we could get Dole Whips at Aulani!!), so they suggested taking the other route to the Polynesian Cultural Center, and going by the Valley of the Temples, which was right off the road to the PCC.

It is actually a cemetery that you drive through to get to the Byodo-in temple. There is an admission fee to go in, but it is not too expensive ($3 for adults, $1 for kids). I am so glad that we took this stop. It was beautiful. The Temple and the grounds were wonderful. The scenery, with the mountain in the background, were incredible. I loved being able to show my kids this new experience and see a little bit of a different culture.

Then we headed to the PCC, but since they don’t open until noon, we went to the LDS temple first. We make it a point to get pictures in front of every temple that there is in the cities that we travel too. The temple is beautiful. The Plam tree-lined street that leads to it from the Ocean in simply picture perfect. It is worth the stop – we are LDS and biased, but we love visiting the temples wherever we go. Standing at the temple and looking down the street to the Ocean is just beautiful!

When we got to the PCC, we met a family member of our friends, because he works at the PCC and was able to get us 50% off our admission and our Luau! The bargain seeker in me was thrilled, especially since the 2 little boys were free. Our kids wanted to go on a boat ride first thing! They were so excited to ride on the boat down the “river” that goes down the middle of the PCC. It was a fun ride! We were able to get to all the countries/villages. We saw all the shows at first, but then the kids didn’t want to see them anymore – they were more interested in the activities, which was fine with me. They got to fish, throw spears, watch a guy climb a tree for a coconut, learn to weave grass and play native games, etc. They loved getting “tattoos” at the different countries.

Kids can get passports to get stamps at each country. If you show all the stamps at the store, they can get a little prize! The Canoe Pagent is a MUST see for anyone visiting! It is in the middle of the day, and it showcases dances from all the different countries. It was great to sit and watch all of the countries at once. My daughter says it was her favorite part.

After an afternoon learning about all the different countries in Polynesia, we headed to the Ali’i Luau. You get a fresh, flower lei on your way in. The food was amazing and the show was fantastic. Apparently, they change the show often, and they JUST started a new version. They dig up the pig and serve it with dinner. They had dances from each of the different countries in Polynesia. It was fun and quite entertaining. My toddler especially enjoyed the hog hunt dance through the audience – he was enthralled with it! The fire dancer was a kid -he was AMAZING. We were so impressed! My 9-year-old want to move to Hawaii and learn how to do it now!

The food was fantastic as well! I especially enjoyed the Guava Cake, the Taro rolls, and the Guava Juice – I think I just like Guava! The MC also taught us how to eat Poi correctly. I remember not liking it at all, when I came to Hawaii when I was younger, but I wanted to try it again. I tried it the way he said to eat it, and it wasn’t nearly as bad! I won’t be running out to buy it, but I don’t think it is as horrible was I used to!

I was wondering if the Luau was worth the price when we bought it, but I am so glad we did. It was worth every penny – the show and the food were wonderful! At the end, all the performers and the staff sing a song of gratitude to the audience! Then all the performers come out to the audience and personally thank you for coming! How awesome is that?!?! I have never been to a show where they come and personally thank you. In fact, ALL day at the PCC, all the employees/performers would thank you for coming. Most are BYU Hawaii students, and the PCC is how they can afford to go to college, and they are very grateful for the opportunity.

After the Luau, was the BIG, nightly show, “Ha: Breath of Life.” No photography of the show was allowed. This show is NOT TO BE MISSED! It is SPECTACULAR! Not many words are spoken during the hour in a half show, the story is mostly conveyed through local dance, performances, and emotion. You are taken through the life of a boy from birth until adulthood. It deals with life and death. It was simply a beautiful story and show. My husband and I both shed tears. I am so glad we saw it! Plus the fire performers at the end were amazing! Seriously, incredible stuff! My kids could not look away! It was a fantastic end to the day!

On the way home, we actually were able to see the Dole Plantation, and we stopped by Wal-Mart for some Macadamia Chocolates (by far the cheapest place!). We had a wonderful day! We were exhausted and ready to get back to our laid back Aulani vacation, but I really enjoyed our time out seeing some of the sites of the Island. While you can enjoy your entire vacation right at Aulani, if you get a chance, I highly recommend taking a day to see the Island, and visit the PCC!

Aulani Room Review and Pictures

Door to Room at Aulani

Door to Room at Aulani

We Loved our entire stay at Aulani. Our room was fantastic. We were on the 10th floor of the EWA tower, in an Oceanview room. We had a one bedroom villa (the only time we could all fit in a one bedroom – it’s two bedroom from now on!). You walk into the villa, to the left is a large bathroom with a sink, toilet, and a huge shower! To the left is the kitchen, which is a beautiful small kitchen. There is then a dining area with booth type seating. There is a closet that contains the washer/dryer, across from the dining area. The living room is large, with a tv, DVD player in an large entertainment center:

Aulani pull down bed

Entertainment center with a full size twin pull down bed!

Below that tv is a pull out bed! It is a full size twin bed! My kids fought over who got to sleep in it! There is a balcony with chairs on it for you to sit in and enjoy the view. The living room also has 2 chairs, side tables, and a comfortable sofa with the pull out queen size bed. There is also a closet that has a highchair and the pack and play. Oh and don’t forget the awesome Minnie Surfing lamp in the living room!

Through the door in the living room, you can get to the master bedroom. The bedroom contains a comfortable King size bed with Mickey Comforter.

There is a tv and entertainment center/dresser. There were enough drawers for everyone in our family to have at least one drawer for our clothes. There is a chair to sit in and then a desk with the famous Mickey Lamp.

I LOVE the lamp! I wish I had one here at home… You can buy them, but they are rather expensive… There is also a balcony off the master bedroom with chairs. A great place to watch the sunset over the ocean. From the bedroom, you get to the other half of the bathroom, which includes a large closet, a sink area, and the large jacuzzi tub. From this bathroom, you can go through a door to get to the other half of the bathroom and then back to the front door.

I did not get many pictures of the room – mainly because as soon as we got in, it was a mess with kids and luggage! As you van see in the pictures below:

The 2 Chairs in the living room – the boys set them up to eat dessert and watch tv. You can also see the bedroom (messy!) and the couch with the bed pulled out for bed!
